Epsom Today is an independent news and information site for Epsom and the towns around it. We report from documents, we cite them, and we have no connection to any of the councils involved.
Three councils, one patch
Epsom, Ewell and Stoneleigh are under Epsom and Ewell Borough Council. Ashtead and Leatherhead are in Mole Valley. Banstead, Tadworth and Kingswood are in Reigate and Banstead. The towns run into one another on the ground and are administered separately on paper, which is why so many people here look up the wrong bin day at least once. We name the responsible council in every story and on every reference page, and Surrey County Council is behind roads, schools and social care across all of them.
What we report
Each council’s planning register and committee papers, licensing notices, police.uk crime data, HM Land Registry sold prices, Food Standards Agency hygiene ratings, Environment Agency flood warnings for the Mole and the local brooks, and company filings in The Gazette. Green belt and the Downs shape most of the significant planning arguments here, and those arguments are conducted on paper long before anything is built.
Reorganisation in 2027
Surrey’s borough and district councils are due to be abolished in 2027 and replaced by a smaller number of unitary authorities, ahead of the timetable in most of England. That is likely to fold our three councils into fewer, and may not put them all in the same one. We will report the detail from the published documents as it is settled rather than guessing.
